Samsung’s smartphone sales are sinking slowly just like Titanic did in the year 1912. According to the latest report published by Canalys, Micromax has shipped more phones than the Korean technology giant in Q4, Q3 of 2014. Thus, it has now become the top phone company in India. This is a good news for Micromax and its fans.

The report also shows that Lava and Karbonn are on 3rd or 4th largest phone vendors in India. India is not the only country where Samsung has lost its top position, combined sales of iPhones have surpassed the sales of Galaxy S6, Note, and Edge. This takes Apple to the number 1 spot in countries like the US, Korea, and China.

Canalys report - the top phone company in India

Here’s the only reason why Samsung is losing its market share.

Poor features in low budget phones: Samsung phone’s in 50 to 200 dollar range have outdated features. For example, Samsung’s latest phone with Tizen OS is incomparable with handsets like Redmi 1s, Lenovo A6600. Xiaomi has sold more than a million Redmi note, 1s handsets in the last 5 to 6 months. A6600 is on its way to becoming Lenovo’s top budget phone. Samsung Tizen phone, which was recently launched in India is one of the worst handset launched by the company till date. Around 50000 Tizen operating system powered phones have been sold in India in the past 2 months.

How can Samsung reclaim its top position?

Price drop: Samsung should drop the price tag on its top handsets like Galaxy Star Pro, Core Prime, Grand, etc. If it does this, people will start ignoring domestic and less successful brands and they’ll start buying Samsung phones.

Powerful budget phones: Samsung should introduce more 1.5 or 2GB RAM phones within 8000 to 12000 price range.

Windows: Samsung hasn’t launched any Windows OS powered device in India. Instead of experimenting with Tizen, it should introduce alternatives to budget Lumia series phones. [Picture Source: Canalys]
