At the Reliance Industries Annual General Meeting of 2018, Reliance Group Chairman announced that his startup i.e. JIO Infocomm has an active user base of 215 million. The company achieved this remarkable feat within 22 months. During the meeting, Mukesh Ambani announced the launch of JIO’s GIgaFiber broadband service and a new handset called JioPhone 2.

JP2 is targeted towards the rural population of India. It is the successor to the mobile device that helped JIO gain the title of the top entry-level manufacturer – JioPhone. It has a better design than JioPhone. The new entry-level 4G handset resembles Nokia and Blackberry phones that were introduced in 2006/2007.

The mobile runs on KAI OS. Google has invested several million dollars in the company that’s developing this operating system. Unlike Firefox OS that died within a year of its launch, KAI OS Isn’t going anywhere soon.

JP2 is powered by VoWiFi technology and it also enables users to make VoLTE calls. The phone has a four-way navigation key and a qwerty keypad. It provides NFC option and a 128GB MicroSD card slot. It flaunts a 2.4-inch display that has a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels.

JioPhone 2 features 512 megabytes RAM. It also carries 4GB storage memory. The mobile supports LTE Bands 40, 5, and 3 and it provides a loudspeaker module.

JioPhone 2

JP2 offers a VGA selfie camera and a 2 megapixel back camera. It supports two SIM card slots, GPS, and FM Radio system.

The mobile comes pre-installed with several JIO applications. As it offers better features than its predecessor, JioPhone 2 will also support WhatsApp, YouTube, and Facebook applications.

Launch date

JP2 will be available in Reliance Stores across India from August 15 onward. As of today, no special deal has been announced for the new device.

Other major announcements

Jio Broadband service: Registration form for the Jio GigaFiber service will go live next month. The service will be available in 1100 cities.

Jio Monsoon Hungama: This new offer allows users to buy JioPhone in exchange for their old devices + payment of Rs 501.

Phones in competition with JP2

There are a few handsets that will compete with KP2 in the Rs 2000 to 3000 price segment. iVoomi Me4 and Micromax Bharat 2 are the best 4G phones under 3000 Rs. You can use SIM cards of your choice in Me4 and MMX Bharat 2.

IVoomi’s device has 1GB RAM whereas MMX BH2 offers just 512GB RAM. So Me4 is a better option among BH2 and Me4.

Will you buy JP 2 or wait for a Xiaomi, Micromax, Intex or other manufacturer launch a new phone under 4000 INR?
