Windows File History is a special feature which saves a copy of your files on an external storage device. It also restores the backed up files later automatically without user’s intervention. If you use WFH, you will not feel the need of using a third-party Backup software.
WFH is one of the least known features of Windows OS. The OS keeps it disabled by default. You can enable it by following the below steps.
Note: This feature requires you to connect an external USB device to the laptop or PC. Make sure that the external disk has enough free space for better results. If the USB disk data transfer speed is low, the file copying task will take several minutes to complete. In such case, try connecting the disk to USB 3.0 port.
How to configure Windows file history?
Visit Windows 10 settings. Click the backup option on the left sidebar. Select the Add a Drive option.
Once the OS detects the external disk, it will show a toggle button to backup your files automatically. Enable this button.
The Microsoft Windows OS will now begin the task of copying files to the USB disk. Click more options for specifying the folders that should be backed up.
WFH allows users to modify the below options:
Advanced settings: Here, you can configure the WFH tool to:
- Save copies of the files every hour, 10 minutes, etc.
- Keep saved instances of files as per your requirements.
This module allows you to check the errors occurred when the WFH tool copied files to the disk. It lets you remove files which are older than a month, and up to 2 years.
Exclude: With this feature, you can make WFH prevent backing up specific folders.
Restore Personal Files: You can restore individual files with the help of this module in WFH.
Click advanced settings option on the Backup Options Window to access the above modules.
Windows File History is a not a new feature of Win 10. You will find this tool in its predecessor, the Windows 8.1 OS.
Windows 10 OS will backup the newer files to the external drive whenever you connect the USB device to the PC.
The OS will restore the corrupted files from the USB drive automatically.
WFH lets you change the default backup drive.
WFH transfers files in the background. This process executes for several minutes. WFH does not show the ETA, nor does it have a progress bar.
Conclusion: WFH does not offer as many features as the tools like AOMEI Backuppper, Cobian but it is a superb feature. It works with all types of pen drives and external HDDs. Windows File History utility is easy to set up. You can use it for backing up important files on the pen drive or HDD.
