Disk Drill is a program that allows you to recover accidentally deleted files or files that have been damaged because of hardware or OS issue. It is a widely used tool that has helped 1000s of users in recovering files of various types.
Disk Drill is available for Windows and Apple MAC OS. It supports various file systems. The program is small but incredibly powerful. It is available in two versions – free and premium.
Below, I have shared a review of the free version of Disk Drill. Our review explains various features of the data recovery software.
How to use Disk Drill? – review
Once you install and run it, the program scans your HDD to understand the structure of the disk.
After it finishes scanning, the program lists the partitions it has found on its main Window.
The program displays the following information of the partitions on its main interface:
- Partition type, the total disk space.
- Utilized storage memory.
It also shows the options to recover the lost files and backup the partition into a recoverable disk image file.
To recover accidentally deleted files, click on recover button beside the partition name.
For example, if you want to recover files from local disk C, click on the recover option beside it.
Once you click on the button, Disk Drill program will scan the selected partition to find all recoverable files.
The program takes few seconds to scan the entire partition. After it completes scanning, Disk Drill displays the files and folders it has found in a tree interface.
The tree UI enables you to explore the contents of the folder. It allows you to recover a single file or a group of files.
To make it easy for the user to find files of specific type, the Disk Drill program displays a list of filters and a search box to the left of the TreeView.
Disk Drill offers filters to quickly find files of the following types.
- Picture, video, document.
- Audio, archives.
In addition to the above options, it enables you to shortlist files by their creation date and size.
To recover files, select the file from the tree interface and right click on it. Now, choose the Recover option.
By default, developers have configured the program to restore files to their original location. You can recover it to a different folder by entering the full path in the blue color text field.
If you don’t find the missing file, run the deep scanner tool of the data recovery software. To do so, head over to the main interface of the program. Now, click on the drop down icon beside the Recover button and select deep scan option.
The DS tool of the Disk Drill program takes few minutes to find all possible files. The software lets you save the scan operation and resume it later.
To create a backup of the disk, click on the extra drop down box on the main window and select backup into recoverable disk image option.
Other important features of the Disk Drill software
Data Protection: The program can prevent accidental loss of data if you enable its data protection feature module.
Disk Drill lets you protect individual folders or an entire directory.
Log Files: The Disk Drill program maintains a log file where it records tasks you run and error/warning the program throws while executing a task.
Preferences: You can configure the Disk Drill program to ignore files of specific types and extensions through the preferences interface.
I had deleted some image and video files from the hard disk prior installing the program. Disk Drill found the files and helped me recover them.
Conclusion: Disk Drill is a user-friendly program that allows users to recover accidentally deleted photos, videos, archive files, documents, etc. The free version of the program has plenty of options. Each feature of the DD tool works as per the user’s expectations. Disk Drill is a great alternative to Piriform Recuva.
