Lenovo G50-45 review and unboxing(80E300FSIN)
What’s inside the box?
I had purchased this laptop through Flipkart in 2015. G50-45 was delivered to my house within 5 days. The box had a charging cable, 4 cell battery, user manual, G50-45, a free Lenovo backpack, and specs sheet.
Lenovo G50-45 gaming:
I’m not a gamer but I tried running GTA San Andreas on G50-45. The game was running well at the highest settings. But I was not able to play GTA in full screen because it doesn’t support 1366 x 768 pixels resolution. The shadows, graphics, animation quality was decent.
This notebook has 3GB dedicated graphics memory. Thus, you can install and run any game of your choice. G50-45 has 800 MHz AMD R5 graphics processing unit. Its performance is comparable with that of NVidia 820 GPU. In my perspective, laptops with AMD CPU and R5 graphics card are better than core i5/i3 and Nvidia 820 graphics for gaming as there’s 3GB VRAM in the former configuration.
If you’re a programmer or a developer like me, you’ll love Lenovo G50-45. Android suite from Google runs well on this notebook. When you start Android studio, 90 to 100% CPU will be utilized. But after a few seconds, the clock speed will decrease to 0.5 to 1.2 GHz. As there’s 8GB of RAM in G50-45, you can run many applications at a time.
G50-45 includes USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports. The data transfer speed in the 1st port is around 4 to 5 Mbps. With USB 3.0 port, the transfer speed will be within 15 to 16 Mbps. This notebook also includes an HDMI slot with which you can easily connect it to your high-definition LED television.
When it is 100% charged, G50-45 offers 4 hours of battery backup on power saving mode. If you reduce the preset brightness, you’ll be able to use G50-45 for up to 5 hours.
If you’ve unplugged the charger, you won’t be able to change power mode. But you can change the brightness. If you’re running a game, the battery backup will drain very fast and the 4 hours backup power will be reduced to half. This notebook is energy star compliant. Thus, will save your electricity bill.
Keyboard and trackpad
I have bought Lenovo G50-45 after reading its reviews on many eCommerce stores. Many people have complained that the trackpad of this notebook behaves strangely. But I was not able to reciprocate this issue.
The Accutype keyboard is not bad. A small area on the left side of it will sink a bit whenever you’ll press the keys. The keyboard lacks backlit system. But you won’t miss it as you will be able to identify the keys even if you use G50-45 in a dark room.
If you want to engage in video chatting via skype, you should be in a room with abundant natural or artificial light. The pictures that taken through G50-45 in a dark room or dim light conditions are not very good.
This is acceptable as there’s no LED flash. The web camera is installed above the display. This laptop has a single microphone module which is aligned to the right side of the webcam.
Lenovo 50-45 has Dolby digital plus surround sound system. It includes the Dolby app with which you can activate/turn-off surround virtualizer for better video, music, and gaming experience. The sound played by G50-45 is as loud as a normal computer speaker. The sound quality is decent.
The display size of Lenovo G50-45 is 15.6 inches and it supports 1280 x 720, 1366 x 768 and 1024 x 600 pixels resolutions. It has 60 Hertz refresh rate. For display management, this notebook features AMD catalyst software.
The cooling system in Lenovo G50-45 laptop is quite good. I’ve used this notebook for continuous 8 hours and it never got heated.
Operating system and apps
Lenovo-G50-45 has Windows 8.1 operating system. The OS will be activated when you connect this notebook to the internet. This machine is loaded with Lenovo update software.
This application will update all outdated software on the laptop when you run it. Unfortunately, there’s no MS-Office in G50-45. You’ll have to download 1 months trial version of MS-Office or you’ll have to buy it if you want to run word, excel or powerpoint.
You can also install Apache open office suite if you don’t want to invest in paid software.
G50-45 comes preloaded with many useless applications (including Superfish) that were running background processes. I removed Superfish from the notebook by downloading the Superfish remover tool from the official Lenovo website.
The pre-installed McAffe virus scanner was consuming 80 to 90% CPU every time I tried installing some apps. Thus, I had to remove it. AMD A8-6410 supports virtualisation. To enable it, you’ll have to download latest BIOS for G50-45 and change its settings. Other useful preloaded apps in G50-45 are:
One key recovery: A Windows 8.1 backup and restore tool.
Lenovo powerDVD 10: With this software, you can watch movies or play video files saved on the HDD or external storage media.
Lenovo ShareIT: This app allows users to share files between your notebook and other computers, tablets or smartphones.
Veriface pro: If you want to set face password in G50-45, run the Veriface pro software.
