According to some analysts, the mobile bills of GSM/WCDMA/CDMA subscribers in India could be hiked by 15%. The reason cited for this is the ongoing spectrum auction. Many telecom researchers believe that the 2015 spectrum auction was the most expensive one till date. To retain their licenses or expand their reach in rural areas, telecom companies had no other option than bidding. India has one of the lowest call, SMS and data tariff rates in the world. But things are expected to change soon.
The government of India has managed to sell spectrum to various telecom companies for 18 to 19 billion dollars. The highest bidders were Idea cellular, Vodafone and Bharti Airtel. These 3 companies will be investing 14 billion US dollars in India and they’ll start offering mobile and data services to some new villages & cities. They’ve also managed to retain their exiting spectrum. Government would be happy with the 2015 spectrum auctions but this is bad news for the middle class citizens.
