Spotting Abnormalities with a Resistivity Meter

5 Flares 5 Flares ×

A resistivity meter can help you learn more about underground conditions by using the power of electricity. A small charge is sent into the soil by the meter, and it then tracks that electricity. Depending on the types of materials that it passes through, the rate of movement will increase or decrease. By looking at these numbers that the meter has given, you know what type of soil – or other materials, like stone or water – are down at certain depths. These machines are often used when doing land surveys before a building project, and they have many other uses as well.

However, what should you do if you get results that you do not understand? What if the rate of speed just does not make sense and does not fit in with any of your charts? Sometimes, you are going to get these types of abnormalities, and knowing how to react to them is crucial. If you want, you can learn more here so that you know what to do.

First, double check the charts. Look even for things that you do not expect to be in that location. Some surveyors miss things because they simply assume that they know what they are going to find, and then they hope that the data matches up with it. What you really want to do is approach this in the other direction, letting the data tell you what you have found.

It may also be necessary to run the test again in that area to see if the abnormality repeats itself. If it only happens once, it could be nothing more than a temporary issue with the device itself. Perhaps it was not used or hooked up correctly. If it happens multiple times, you know that you are getting a correct reading, so you can then take action to figure out what that reading means.

Finally, if you have a pair of resistivity meters, you could consider using them both on the same spot. You can then see if the results match. This is similar to just running the test twice, and it tells you that your equipment is working the way that it is supposed to work. You want to keep careful track of all of the data that you get as you go along. If you still keep getting the strange readings, the next step may simply be excavation so that you can learn what is giving them to you. You can learn more here .
