Slow computers and internet connections are the obvious reasons for frustration. There are many possible reasons for the slowness of your computer/laptop and the most common reasons are highly fragmented disks, viruses and malwares running processes which consumes high amount of RAM, Windows Services RAM (services that you don’t use) running in the background and consuming, Running an application not compatible with your computer/laptop…if you don’t fix them ..you’ll experience this forever on your computer/laptop. Anyways, there are much software (free as well as commercial) available in the market you can use to optimize the performance of your operating system or you can simply follow the below suggestions to Improve the performance of your windows powered Computer/Laptop:-

  • Defragmenting your Hard Disks:-Microsoft provides an utility program “Disk Defragmenter” to defragment your Hard Disk partitions .After opening the window Disk Defragmenter program, all you need to do is to select a partition and click on the defragment button .. On doing this, the program would automatically analyze the selected partition and defragment it.
  • Virus and Malware Check:-You may not know that your computer/laptop has been infected with a virus/malware unless you install a sophisticated antivirus on your system .On the computers/laptops not having an antivirus installed, by the time you reach a conclusion that your computer is infected by a virus/malware … damage has been done .Viruses /malwares are nothing but programs written intentionally to cause harm to your operating system. Your computers performance may be affected seriously if viruses remain undetected. Viruses run in the system background, continuously monitor system’s and user’s activity and accordingly affect the operating system .Hence you should install powerful antivirus software and perform periodic check of viruses/malwares by performing a scan operation from the antivirus software.
  • Disabling Unnecessary Windows services:-Even though you don’t require them, there are some windows services running in the background. These services use your computer’s/laptop’s RAM and CPU cycles to perform a specific task’s. (CPU cycles when an application using this service is launched our automated task like indexing files, performing auto updates when connected to the internet ….etc).It’s a good idea to disable the services (to run the service manager in windows-> Run ->Services.msc->Enter) that you don’t use …id you do this ..You’ll discover an improvement in the performance of your computer and for that to happen you’ll need to identify the window’s services that you don’t use / don’t want to use and disable it . To disable a window’s services follow these steps:-
  1. Type services.msc in run and press enter (After logging into your Administrator Account).
  2. A Window containing all the window’s services would be displayed.
  3. Right click on the service you want to disable and select properties from the popup menu .
  4. A Window containing the information and controllers of the service would be popped up …in the general tab …from the startup type drop down list select disabled and hit enter..
  5. Done! The service has been disabled.
  • Checking Compatibility of the applications:-There may be times where you un-intentionally install and run an application that isn’t compatible with the hardware of your computer. On running such programs your computer might crash or you may experience a terrible slowdown. In such cases you feel that something is wrong with the hardware or the operating system.. And you eventually end up in wasting some bucks. If you experience a slowdown on running some programs, check the system requirements in the applications Read Me file … And if you find that your computer/laptop doesn’t meet the minimum requirements of the software …better upgrade your hardware or stop using that application software.
  • Performing a Clean-up Operation:-Although , Windows operating systems have an inbuilt application “Disk Cleanup” that allows you to unnecessary delete files from your system you’d like to use a more sophisticated free utility software like “CCleaner” that has the capability to repair registry , detect and delete un-used registry values , empty your browsers/systems cache , delete temporary files …etc.Once you perform a clean-up operation , you’ll notice a slight improvement in the speed of your computer .
